Is Pilates for me?

Pilates is a method of moderate intensity, low impact exercise that is suitable for all ages and abilities.

The exercises can be modified to meet the physical needs and aspirations of the individual.

Originally developed by Joseph Pilates, who in the 1920’s created his system of exercises, now known as the Pilates Method. He first helped patients in an infirmary to regain strength and mobility and to overcome illness and disability, eventually setting up the first Pilates studio in New York, where his highly successful method attracted professional Dancers, Actors, Athletes and Gymnasts. Pilates method of exercise is now a recognised and respected method of body conditioning, recommended by GP’s, Physiotherapists and Osteopaths.

The Pilates method can be taught in general group Pilates fitness classes but also commonly used to address postural issues, rehabilitation, post operatively and also for injury recovery. Sports professionals at Olympic level and elite dancers will use Pilates to support their training regime and to help prevent injury.

The focus is on strengthening the core muscles supporting the abdomen, pelvis and spine whilst encouraging alignment and balancing muscle function and efficiency of movement throughout the whole body.

Pilates exercises can be done whilst lying on a mat on the floor known as Pilates Matwork, or using a variety of specifically designed Pilates apparatus.

Those with limited mobility can also do exercises whilst standing, seated or whilst laying on an elevated cushioned platform, if moving up and down from the floor is difficult.

If you have any recent injuries, operations or medical conditions and unsure if Pilates is for you, or if you have been recommended by a medical professional to do Pilates exercise, it is necessary to obtain consent from your practitoner and then attend a private Pilates assessment /introductory session so that a full consultation and postural assessment can be carried out to best assess your needs and to discuss your personal goals.

Integration – All muscle groups are integrated into a balanced workout

Big group classes not for you?…can’t find a suitable class at a time to suit your lifestyle?

” Having private tuition is like having your own personal coach, so there are lots of corrections and attention to detail, but you discover a lot about your own body and what to do to improve, but you can also arrange semi-private sessions with a friend or member of the family of similar ability, so it would make it even more affordable… “

Pilates tuition with 1 to 1 teacher to client tuition – these personal tution exercise sessions can be designed for people of all ages and abilities.

General Pilates fitness group classes are mainly for well, reasonably mobile people, who are pain free and without any specific health problems, recent injury or rehabilitation needs that require a high degree of attention provided by private tuition.

Tranquil environment of the studio provides a relaxed atmosphere with more direct attention to your own needs, body movement and constructive correction of incorrect movement patterns caused by muscular imbalances and postural issues.

Eliminates the impersonal feeling and sometimes intimidating feel of a larger group environment for some people who need more self-confidence and support.

Promotes your understanding of the Pilates repertoire to gain maximum benefit when performed correctly.
